Matthew is one of the 4 accounts of Jesus' life, or gospels. It was written for a Jewish audience to make the case that Jesus is the promised Messiah. It begins with a genealogy from Abraham to Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Matthew gives the details of Jesus' birth, including the visit of the "Three Kings" or wise men.
Don't get bogged down in the first chapter genealogy because there is much to be enjoyed in this wonderful book. "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet; "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"- which means, "God with us.""
This is a manifestation of what God had said in Genesis and Jerimiah's prophecy. It was said, prophecied and came to pass. This also shows to me that if you will listen, when you hear the Lord, follow Him, do as He says and not go off on your own He kept Jesus safe, He will keep us safe. Be followers and obedient. Joseph was obedient and did as the angel of the Lord had told Him. As we know Mary did also. For these people to be obedient we have the beginning of salvation manifesting right before our eyes in these chapters.

The angel who appeared to Joseph in Matthew is not named. It says only that an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.
DeleteFor me this was a reminder that we're living on God's time and not our own. It's fascinating that there were 14 generations between each "segment" of Christ's family tree.
ReplyDeleteWow, I was thinking that exact thing Beth, 14,14 and 14. Makes me wonder if something significant happened every seventh generation.
